IN TRANSIT: The Performer
On a hot day in the summer of 2016 David took the Q Train from Times Square to Coney Island with plans to travel the length of the boardwalk to Brighton Beach. When the train resurfaced above ground in Brooklyn, the daylight turned the interior of the car into a perfectly lit lightbox. The scene that unfolded was classic New York. A shirtless, muscled performer began to dance to the rhythms of his boombox, performing acrobatic feats as the train barreled down the tracks. The captive audience approved. When the train arrived at its final destination the performer packed his things and crossed the track, boarding the Manhattan bound car to begin the performance all over again.
This series highlights the different ways that New York City connects people who might otherwise not encounter each other, and David believes that the act of seeing such photographs, of witnessing such moments, actually opens the possibility of strengthening these chance relationships.
